Through remarkable historical accounts, this book traces the lives, struggles, and achievements of African men and women who lived in Norway from as early as 1589.
Among the earliest known Africans in Norway were members of King James’ royal cortege, whose presence marked the beginning of a little-known chapter in Norwegian history. The book also tells the extraordinary story of Christian Hansen Ernst, an African man who rose to prominence and was appointed postmaster in Kragerø in 1681. His life reveals both the possibilities and challenges faced by Black people in early Scandinavian society. What became of Norway’s first Black public official, and how was he remembered?
The narrative further follows the handful of Africans who lived in Norway during the 1800s, uncovering stories that have long remained hidden from mainstream history. Readers are introduced to Mathilde Philips, recognized as Norway’s first Black nurse, whose journey symbolizes courage, resilience, and determination in the face of social barriers.
